At Trent Blood Bikes, we provide a rapid response medical courier service to the NHS, GP surgeries, and local healthcare facilities. We operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Our service bridges the gap in healthcare logistics, ensuring that time-critical medical items reach their destination safely and quickly, regardless of the weather or the size of the consignment.
Our Fleet: Bikes and Cars
To ensure we never let a patient down, we operate a mixed fleet of rapid response vehicles.
🏍️ Blood Bikes: The backbone of our operation. Our liveried motorcycles are used for speed and agility, cutting through heavy traffic and congestion to deliver urgent samples and blood products in the fastest possible time.
🚗 Support Cars: When the cargo is too large for a motorcycle pannier—such as bulk samples or large medical equipment boxes—our support cars take over. These vehicles are also vital during adverse weather conditions, ensuring that our service continues uninterrupted even in ice, snow, or high winds when motorcycles cannot run safely.
What We Transport
We adhere to strict MHRA guidelines regarding the safe transport of biological substances.
🧪 Urgent Pathology Samples (Hospitals & GPs)
Diagnosis dictates treatment. We transport time-critical samples (blood, tissue, swabs) not just between hospitals, but from GP surgeries and local clinics directly to pathology laboratories. This ensures that samples taken from patients at their local doctor’s surgery arrive at the lab quickly for immediate testing.
🩸 Whole Blood & Blood Products
The core of our operation. We transport units of blood, platelets, and plasma between blood banks and hospitals for emergency transfusions.
🍼 Human Donor Milk
We support the transport of frozen and pasteurised donor breast milk to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). This provides vital antibodies and nutrition to premature and sick babies.
💊 Pharmacy & Surgical Equipment
We transport urgent medication, controlled drugs, and specialised surgical instruments between sites. For larger equipment or bulk pharmacy transfers that exceed the capacity of a motorcycle, we deploy our support cars to ensure the delivery is made in a single trip.

We are volunteers, but we are not amateurs.
Tracking: We use Artery, a bespoke live-dispatch system, to track every rider and driver in real-time, ensuring a secure chain of custody.
Rider Qualifications: All our motorcycle riders must hold a current Advanced Riding qualification (RoSPA or IAM) to ensure they can handle the bike safely in all conditions.
Driver Standards:
While our car drivers are not required to hold an advanced ticket, they undergo a comprehensive driving skills assessment. We ensure every driver is capable of smooth, safe, and progressive driving to protect the delicate and precious cargo on board.
Service Area
We primarily serve hospitals, GP surgeries, hospices, and milk banks across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and the wider Trent region. However, as part of the nationwide network of blood bikes, we frequently perform “relays”—handing over packages to neighbouring groups at county borders to facilitate long-distance transport across the UK.
